In these pieces I return to some novels that I originally wrote about in The Bohemian Aesthetic a few years back. Here I'm trying a new twist in partition, limiting my remarks and observations to the first 40-50 pages or so of each novel in the hope of hinting at what a hugely profitable work of art each of one them is. These new pieces might be read as supplements to my earlier writings on these same novels, not as improvements or substitutions. In many cases, after a couple of years' interlude, I've found that different aspects of the novels now occupy my attention or seem more important now and that, conversely, some of the things I thought were important in my earlier pieces may not be quite the things to emphasize after all. |
